The plot surrounds wounded ex-marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who is unwillingly thrust into a battle to exploit an exotic planet - Alpha Centauri B-4 - which is rich in natural resources.

However, he finds himself leaving his human colleagues and joining the indigenous race of lifeforms in their battle for survival.
