The cast were at the final stop of their UK tour before beaming back to the US, and phasers were set to fun as they answered question from the assembled press.
Leading men Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto were keen to explain the significance on taking on such iconic roles in this latest movie. Heroes star Quinto revealed how the role of Spock ended up coming to him by way of an “unintentional campaign”.
For those wondering what to expect from the new James T. Kirk, Trekkies might be relieved to hear that Pine’s interpretation of Shatner, whilst “paying homage to what was done before” thankfully also gave him the opportunity to “breath new life” into the character.
And the man who has taken on the enormous responsibility of reimagining one of the most enduring sci-fi franchises was in fine garrulous fettle. Although no stranger to big budget blockbusters, Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams was happy to admit this was “so much bigger than anything I’ve worked on before”, and the hardest part was getting a good storyline because “none of the spectacle would matter if you didn’t care about the characters”.
Fanboy Simon Pegg plays Scotty and demonstrated the lasting legacy of Star Trek. Recalling how surreal it was to play a role opposite a pointy-eared Vulcan he had known since he was nine - “It was kind of odd to have Leonard (Nimoy) look at me and say the lines and for me not to go, ‘Wuhuhehehhh!’ and become very excited and want to go to the toilet.”
