Review

An old fogeys' detective movie.

Very low-key in execution and mega laid-back in performance, this Hollywood mystery boasts an amazing veteran cast, headed by Paul Newman as a retired gumshoe holed up with equally retired film stars Gene Hackman (who's dying) and his wife Susan Sarandon (with whom Newman's in love), plus daughter Reese Witherspoon, whom Newman retrieved from gigolo Liev Schreiber two years earlier.

The mystery starts when Hackman gives Newman a package, presumably blackmail money concerning the death of Sarandon's spouse 20 years before, to be delivered to a Ms Lamar.

All Newman finds a dying private eye (M Emmet Walsh) almost as old as himself - and trouble.

All this is not quite so intriguing as it sounds, even though James Garner and Stockard Channing are also part of the plot.

The equivalent of an old folks' home production of The Maltese Falcon, it will still enthral fans of the stars.
