After the comedy horror film came this musical comedy horror, which is pretty far out even for the mid Seventies. Barry Bostwick and a very young Susan Sarandon (who also reveals a small but attractive singing voice) play the all-American couple who, unwise enough to stop at a castle to use the phone, are both seduced by its occupant, a transsexual transvestite Transylvanian intent on creating a superman for his own pleasures. It's all, as Sally Bowles would say, divinely decadent. The best performance comes from Richard O'Brien (who also wrote it) as the obligatory hunchback; his first appearance at a window is a sensationally striking moment that the rest of this cult favourite never quite matches. A very young Koo Stark appears as a bridesmaid.
