A no-holds-barred, steamy remake of the classic 1946 MGM film, based on the controversial and once-banned novel by James M Cain.

Jack Nicholson supplies gusto if little guts, as the drifter succumbing to a dangerous affair with his employer's sexy wife, but the film's real treasure is Jessica Lange (in the role made famous by Lana Turner).

Nothing in the remake of King Kong or Bob Fosse's All That Jazz prepared us for her amazing acting range, which director Bob Rafelson skilfully exploits.

It comes as little surprise that she went on to win an Oscar for her work in Tootsie.
