the italian job

Criminal masterminds Michael Caine and Noel Coward pull off the classic caper that blows the bloody doors off all others. When incarcerated crime king Mr Bridger (Coward) gets wind of a stash of gold bullion in Turin, he dispatches Charlie Croker (Caine) - the coolest crook on the outside - to go and nick it. All he needs is a technical genius to cause a traffic jam (Benny Hill!), a few good drivers, an empty bus and three Minis - one red, one white, one blue...

Review

Despite the talents of Michael Caine, Noël Coward and Benny Hill, the cars are the stars of this action-comedy in which Coward is the jailed mastermind who organises the theft of $4million in gold bullion.

Caine is at his best as the leader of a gang of comic crooks who carry out his plans, but the getaway chase is more memorable than the robbery itself.

It's brilliantly staged by a team of stunt drivers called L'Equipe Remy Julienne.
