Review

Smalltime con artist Roy Dillon (John Cusack) has a good front for his small-time but successful activities and an attractive girlfriend (Annette Bening) in tow. Everything is fine until his mother (Anjelica Huston) shows up and makes things difficult for him and his girl - while the Mob is after her. Despite sound performances from all the principals, this film is less satisfying than the novel by Jim Thompson upon which it's based. It's all a little uneven, until all the pieces start coming together towards the end. Half the problem, perhaps, is that the characters don't really command our sympathy.
