The Great Escape 11

Anyone who hasn't seen John Sturges' classic PoW adventure deserves a spell in the cooler! Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough and Charles Bronson are among the Allied prisoners planning a mass breakout from a Nazi prison camp. Endlessly rousing, superbly plotted, sharply characterised and tense as a barbed-wire fence, it's the stuff of legend.

Review

A truly great example of the PoW film with a thrilling climax. The stars who score best are Steve McQueen as Hilts, who chalks up his 20th escape bid, John Leyton as Willie the tunneller and James Donald, as the British CO. The script makes the most of all the PoW humour and heartbreak, especially when the first escape tunnel is found by the Germans.
