The Day The Earth Stood Still 1951

Iconic sci-fi suspenser starring Michael Rennie as Klaatu, an extraterrestrial diplomat with an ultimatum for the world's leaders. Naturally, he meets a hostile reception from we Earthlings but has a rather effective protector in the form of a nine-foot robot called Gort. Patricia Neal shows Klaatu the better side of human nature as the landlady of his earthly digs.

Review

This landmark sci-fi movie is performed beautifully by an excellent cast led by Michael Rennie as a kindly alien and Patricia Neal as the boss of the boarding house where he shelters. There's much else to savour in this classic, from Bernard Herrmann's haunting score to the imposing presence of Rennie's giant silver robot companion Gort. `Klaatu barada nikto! ' was a cult catchphrase of the day.
