The Bachelor 04

Chris O'Donnell stars as a happily single guy who has to get married within 24 hours in order to inherit $100million. Renée Zellweger is his likeliest target in a bullish romantic comedy with a cast featuring faces as diverse as Mariah Carey and Peter Ustinov. Based on the Buster Keaton silent classic Seven Chances.

Review

A Chris O'Donnell romantic comedy based on a Buster Keaton silent? Sounds a bizarre idea, and it turns out to be cute or cloying, according to your taste. Nicely shot by director Gary Sinyor, with a sweeping array of supporting stars that includes Renée Zellweger (credible and likeable as O'Donnell's current squeeze), Peter Ustinov, Brooke Shields and (in her film debut) singer Mariah Carey, the film's fly in the ointment is O'Donnell, who, as the guy who has to get married within 24 hours to inherit a fortune, is simply bland in a part that Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey could have turned into a lovable riot.
