Saturday Night Fever 01

Dancefloors were never the same after John Travolta became a hip-swivelling, jacket-throwing icon in the movie that launched the disco craze. Thanks to The Bee Gees' timeless soundtrack, you can tell by the way he uses his walk that he's a woman's man - but Brooklyn boy Tony Manero's ego takes a pricking when he gets serious with dance partner Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney, whose career strangely disappeared without a trace). But their moves dazzle like a glitterball.

Review

Thirty years on, toes still tap to the fabulous Bee Gees score of this sweet-and-sour story of life in the slums of Brooklyn.

As hardware store worker and disco dancing king Tony, snake-hipped John Travolta powered his way to stardom with a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

The film's SO Seventies - who could resist that disco beat and, boy, could Travolta dance! To prepare for the role, he ran two miles and danced for three hours daily, losing 20lb in the process.
