Review

Alexander Novak, a young Scot, goes to Prague, the birthplace of his mother, in search of the answers to a wartime mystery. She believed her family had been drowned in the Danube while trying to evade transportation to a Nazi labour camp. Alexander meets research officer Elena in his hunt for the elusive piece of film and they become lovers. Prague has recently become a popular location for film-makers and is an attractive backdrop for this beautifully-photographed drama. Unfortunately, the story itself is a little thin and the characters aren't very strong. The story also leaves too many loose ends, making its conclusion rather unsatisfying. Strongest performances are from Sandrine Bonnaire as Elena and Bruno Ganz as her boss Josef, although Alan Cumming (as Alexander) is an interesting new face to watch for the future.
