An exuberant, amoral yarn. Jules Dassin who directs, cast his wife Melina Mercouri as the Athens whore with a heart of gold and himself as the priggish American who tries to reform her. Some critics branded it naive but Mercouri's ebullient performance and a superb score by Manos Hadjidakis turned it into a box office success - and helped transform the Greek tourist industry!
