Partly inspired by Shane, this Warner Bros Western, originally filmed in 3D, finds John Wayne cast in a familiar role as a virtuous gunfighter idolised by a hero-worshipping youngster. Wayne tries to persuade the boy and his mother to leave their remote ranch, which is continually under threat of attack from Apache raids, with little initial success. The 3D camerawork really came into its own in the eye-catching exterior shots of the rugged mountain ranges (necessarily 'flattened' in this version) and the Native Americans are well treated and fairly rounded characters. .
