Review

Fans of the Rocky Horror Show will adore this 'post-punk neo-glam rock odyssey' based on the cult hit London and off-Broadway show. John Cameron Mitchell gives it that very last inch as Hedwig, born Hansel in East Berlin, who falls in love with a G. I, undergoes a sex-change to marry him and flees to the West. Now Hedwig is taking her rock band on an American tour, telling her life story in a series of gigs at seafood restaurants. Her tour coincides with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt), a boy who once loved Hedwig, but stole her heart and her songs. Move over, Moulin Rouge, this is how musicals need to be done on film - fast, fluent and furious. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but, if it's yours, this is the heady brew that is true. A musical about something - and Mitchell is brilliant.
