A surprise hit on its release, this cheerful fantasy comedy sees a Seattle family adopting a yeti-like creature they run across in the forest. John Lithgow and Melinda Dillon are the parents who find themselves lurching from one hairy situation to another. Make-up ace Rick Baker earned yet another Oscar nomination for his work in turning giant actor Kevin Peter Hall into Bigfoot (Hall then went on to tackle Arnie as the Predator).

Review

The sweet and sentimental story of how a yeti-type creature comes to live with an ordinary family in suburban Seattle and teaches them the lessons of love and peace.

Reminiscent at times of E. T. (and, in fact, co-produced by an uncredited Steven Spielberg), it's full of amusing, touching images - like the gentle Bigfoot mourning the death of a mink stole and the family roast, and burying them in a shallow grave.

Inside the bulky Bigfoot suit is six-feet-seven actor Kevin Peter Hall, who was later typecast as the very tall alien in both 'Predator' movies. Bigfoot's excellent creature effects, by award-winning make-up expert Rick Baker, were Oscar-nominated.
