John Ford's early Western success has the expected scenes of siege by Indians and pioneer hardship but is a visual gem with remarkable colour photography. Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play a young couple on the 1776 American frontier: she keeps her upper lip prettily stiff and he has a famous marathon footslog through an Indian gauntlet. Solid, cunningly crafted entertainment.

John Ford's frontier adventure stars Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert as a young couple trying to settle in upstate New York during the Revolutionary War. Driven by the pioneer spirit and a wagonful of action, it's the sort of rousing and romantic epic that made the Fonda-Ford partnership such a roaring success.
