Teenage tearaway Kale (LaBeouf) isn't just grounded...he's been electronically tagged to stop him straying beyond his suburban garden fence.
The trauma of seeing his pop die in front of him in a pile-up and a well-aimed punch at the head of his Spanish teacher have ensured he's wobbling precariously off the rails.
Confined to his cabin-style home, he soon tires of TV dinners, video games and his despairing mom (Carrie-Anne Moss) and finds his attention wandering to the neighbours.
On the plus side, there's newly-moved in hottie Sarah Roemer taking the occasional dip. But on the dark side there's the sinister Mr Turner (baby-faced David Morse).
Kale's noticed Turner's dented blue convertible bears a striking similarity to the getaway vehicle of some creep spotted abducting a teenage girl.
As a antidote to his increasing stir craziness, he embarks on a high-tech surveillance campaign with binoculars and camcorders and even ropes in the lithe Sarah as an partner-in-peeping.
But is Mr Turner a slash'n'grab merchant...or is Kale's fevered imagination - stoked by his house arrest - slipping into a heightened state of paranoia?
DJ Caruso's neat little thriller won't win any awards for originality (Hitch will be spinning six feet under) but it does work surprisingly well bearing in mind you can almost second guess every plot twist.
Roemer is certainly easy on the eye while LaBeouf displays just the right blend of street guile and adolescent naivete.
In fact, it's a glowing endorsement to join your local Neighbourhood Watch.
