Disaster Movie

The fifth Mickey-take from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer sees the American spoof-meisters homing in on the disaster movie genre. Broad and bawdy, their scattergun approach hits targets ranging from Amy Winehouse to Indiana Jones. A group of twenty-somethings tries to make its way to safety Cloverfield-style after New York falls victim to a meteor attack. Mad TV's Nicole Parker and Ike Barinholtz are on hand to wheel out the celebrity impressions while Carmen Electra provides the usual low-rent glam.

Review

After Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet The Spartans, the comedy directorial team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer target the disaster movie.

Actually, they don't "target" the disaster movie genre at all. What they do is clodhoppingly exaggerate scenes from any old film just like they did for the four previous lame outings.

So we get clunkingly recreated setpieces from 10,000BC and Enchanted amongst others - hardly "disaster movies" - all served up with a dollop of ordure. Hang on to your sides - they might just split.

This is lowest common denominator stuff, crippled by the law of diminishing returns and toe-curlingly insulting thanks to a bargain basement aesthetic.

Carmen Electra is back, looking as ropey as a fire sale at a yacht chandlers, while mimics Nicole Parker, Christa Flanagan and Ike Barinholtz provide the sort of turns you might expect well down the running order at Jarrow Working Men's' Club.

The loose-as-a-pair-of-old-Y-fronts premise is that gaffe-prone Will (Lanter) has to search a meteor-strewn Manhattan for his huffed girlfriend Amy (Minnillo) whose sought shelter on the set of Night At The Museum. Nothing particularly disastrous about that, either.

Joining him on his odyssey are Gary "G-Thang" Johnson's dude Calvin and Flanagan's pregnant teen Juney (Juno - get it?) along with Enchanted's princess (Parker), inexplicably reborn as a drug-addicted sewer slut.

The calibre of the actresses is never likely to trouble the Academy - Minnillo is best known as Miss Teen USA Pageant 1998 and for her appointment as Flirt! Cosmetic's "Guest Creator".

Kim Kardashian, who plays Calvin's chick Lisa, is a fashion stylist whose workout DVD apparently targets four different body parts which can be downloaded individually. She's also the spokesperson for Bongo Jeans. She can't act.

Like Hepatitis B, this is one of those movies you just hope will go away.

It doesn't though.
