This noisy, brain-in-neutral mega-hit popcorn movie reunites star Tom Cruise with his Top Gun director Tony Scott and assaults us with the roar of stock-car engines.
Developments on the track are predictable and far fetched as cocky young driver Cole Trickle (Cruise) sets out to grab his share of stock-car glory.
The decent actors valiantly battle lots of duff lines: 'I'm more afraid of bein' nothin' than I am of bein' hurt' he tells his new girlfriend, brain surgeon Nicole Kidman.
The stars are outshone by Robert Duvall as the designer of Cruise's car and Cary Elwes as his rival.

Tom Cruise and Top Gun director Tony Scott feel the need for speed again in this pedal-to-the-metal tale of big boy racers. Cruise is Cole Trickle, a hotshot driver whose biggest obstacle on the circuit is his ego. Luckily, he's got pit legends Robert Duvall and Randy Quaid to keep him on track and neurosurgeon Nicole Kidman (!) to bring down the testosterone level when it hits danger point. The romance between Cruise and Kidman was to blossom on-screen and off, while notorious producer Don Simpson defied death long enough to enjoy his role as one of Cole's competitors. Fast, furious and flashier than Cruise's grin.
