Boys Don't Cry 03

In Kimberly Pierce's superbly handled telling of a true story, Hilary Swank bagged an Oscar for her tender/tough performance as Brandon Teena, the Midwestern teenage girl who passed herself off as a boy - with tragic consequences. Chloƫ Sevigny deserves equal credit as Teena's lover Lana, since it's the chemistry between them that makes their doomed affair so compelling. Drama of the highest class.

Review

A long, painful and intense true story about Teena (Hilary Swank), a girl who spent her life wanting to be a boy and made up her mind to live as one.

Running away in the wake of a car theft charge, she falls heavily for Lana (Chloë Sevigny) only to find her involved with two psychotic ex-cons.

The tragic consequences of this liaison make this complex film difficult to watch in spite of amazing performances by Swank and Sevigny.
