An Alaskan sled dog (voiced by Kevin Bacon) who is half-wolf, helps bring vital medical supplies for the sick children of his town after embarking on a 600-mile mercy dash. The film is based on a true story which inspired the Iditarod dog sled race.

Review

Although not up to Disney's standards, this animated adventure set in Alaska about a half wolf-half dog who rescues a town's children when a sled loaded with medical supplies fails to get through is nevertheless exciting.

It also has a strong voice cast headed by Kevin Bacon as the heroic Balto, Bob Hoskins, Bridget Fonda, Phil Collins and Donald Sinden.

Strange though it may seem for a cartoon feature, this is based on a true story. Good family entertainment.
