Richard Burton stars as Henry VIII in a lavish historical epic, but it's Genevieve Bujold who takes the title role of Anne Boleyn, the wife for whom he alienated the people and, more importantly, the Catholic church. Both lead performances were amongst its eleven Oscar nominations, but it took just the one - unsurprisingly for the wonderful costume design - losing the Best Picture award to Midnight Cowboy... presumably by a head.

Review

This sumptuous costume drama won Oscar nominations for best film, best actor (Richard Burton as Henry VIII) and best actress (Genevieve Bujold as Anne Boleyn). In the event, it clinched only one Academy Award that year - the one for costume design. Engrossing, well-crafted drama, even if Burton was to have unfair competition in the Henry VIII stakes a couple of years later from Sidney James in 'Carry On Henry'!
