Psychological mystery with Jane Fonda as a psychiatrist trying to fathom a young nun (Meg Tilly) accused of murdering her child. Anne Bancroft co-stars as a sympathetic Mother Superior while veteran director Norman Jewison (In The Heat Of The Night; Moonstruck) keeps the intrigue simmering nicely.

Review

A sort of ecclesiastical whodunit about a young novitiate nun who seems to have strangled the baby no-one knew she was having, and about the investigative psychiatrist determined to find out the truth. Meg Tilly is the nun, Jane Fonda the shrink, and Anne Bancroft the hip-talking Mother Superior who tries to come between them: all are excellent. The ending is logically the only possible one, but can't help but lend a sense of anti-climax to an otherwise absorbing adult tale that almost entirely escapes its stage origins.
