Possibly the most attention grabbing debut since Citizen Kane, Reservoir Dogs announced to the world that a new sheriff was in Hollywoodtown and he wasn't taking prisoners. With so many imitators in its wake, it is hard to now to remember just how new and exciting this looked at the beginning of 1993. Here was a film with dialogue to kill for, performances of an intensity unseen for years, and a tricksy structure that denied the audiences the bungled jewel heist that sets off the catalogue of violence. It's famed ear-slicing torture scene had the Daily Mail screaming for the film to be banned. All in all, a good day's work.
