Steve Guttenberg, one of the forgotten legends of the 80s, is planning a comeback with sequels to his most popular comedies. The actor's set to star in an all new Police Academy adventure - as well as a third instalment in the Three Man And A Baby franchise.
“We are doing a new Police Academy movie, and it is going to be great fun," explained Guttenberg who just turned 50.
"A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return.”
The Police Academy movies helped launch the careers of both Sharon Stone and Sex & The City's Kim Catrall, and Guttenberg would like nothing more than to have his former leading ladies return as well.
“I know Kim and Sharon have been asked but they haven’t said yes.... Yet! It would be really great to have them onboard.”
Meanwhile, Guttenberg has been working on bringing the Three Men franchise back to life.
“Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and I are looking to make another Three Men And A Baby movie. It’s called Three Men and A Bride. The script is pretty much written and we are really keen to get that made. We’re very hopeful.”
Guttenberg found fame with the 1982 comedy, Diner, although it was two years later, in Police Academy, that he earned leading man status. Roles in Cocoon, two Police Academy sequels and Short Circuit
followed, while 1987's Three Men and A Baby saw the actor hit his peak. The Cocoon and Three Men sequels both did good business, but by 1991 Guttenberg had made his last hit.
Having appeared in four Police Academies, Guttenberg called it a day on the franchise. Something he now regrets.
“I loved doing the Police Academy films. They gave me so much opportunity, and I've got nothing but good memories of that time," he said.
“I turned down Short Circuit 2 too and I now wish I hadn’t. Sequels are a lot of fun and you get to hang out with all your friends… I wish I hadn’t turned those down.”
For those wondering where the sudden urge for a comeback originated, you can see Steve in Panto this year - he's playing Baron Hardup in Cinderella at The Churchill in Bromley.
