Patton: "We're not just going to shoot the b*stards, we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads on our tanks."
George C Scott marched to Oscar glory in this warts and all portrait of famously gung-ho US general, George S Patton.
Scripted by Francis Ford Coppola (who also nabbed an Oscar) the film depicts the huge contribution the controversial general made to the invasion of Germany in WWII, a feat achieved despite his legendary ability for putting his foot in it with the military top brass.
Featuring a magnetic performance from Scott, Patton is an utterly compelling look at one of military history's most colourful figures.
The Whole Truth?: Renowned for its even-handed approach to portraying the general, the film also boasts spot-on historical detail with the pistols that Scott is seen wearing in the famous opening scene having originally belonged to Patton himself.
