A rumour is rapidly spreading across the internet regarding George Lucas and his plan for a new trilogy of Star Wars movies. According to one in particular, a 'trusted source' insists Lucas will follow the 3D style of James Cameron's Avatar.

An entirely new trilogy of Star Wars movies are apparently being planned out, according to a rumour gathering pace across the internet.

Movie blog site, MarketSaw, claims a 'trusted source' has informed them of Lucas's plans to create a new trilogy using technology pioneered by James Cameron for his sci-fi movie, Avatar. They also claim that the Star Wars movies would only go ahead if Cameron's film proves a huge success.

Meanwhile, another rumour indicates the original trilogy is being adapted for 3D retrospectively, with Lucas insisting that he wants 5,000 3D-ready cinemas in play before he will consider doing it (there's currently 3,000).

It's also hinted that Lucas intends to produce the trilogy, and leave the directing duties to his helming buddies, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola.

Ain't It Cool News picked up on the story, and contacted the LucasFilm Press office, who insisted that there were no plans for either a new trilogy, or a 3D adaption of the original movies, although that was to be expected.

The guys at Aint It Cool have already seen test footage of Star Wars in 3D, so that development appears inevitable regardless of LucasFilm's protestations.

George Lucas and co. are currently promoting the second series of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is appearing on Sky Movies Premiere.
