Even better than the Scream films (also written by Kevin Williamson), this is a nicely-made teen fright movie in which both Williamson and director Jim Gillespie show intelligence and invention, especially in a murder in piles of rubber tyres, through which the victim has almost reached safety. And in tiny Jennifer Love Hewitt, it has a doe-eyed, plunge-necklined, much-screaming heroine in the finest horror traditions. She's one of four youngsters who, after high school graduation, are careering along a cliff road when they run down a man, subsequently reluctantly agreeing to dump the body at sea. Next summer people start falling victim to a fiend dressed as a fisherman who kills his prey with a hook. And Hewitt gets a note saying 'I know what you did last summer'. Things lead up to a pounding finale aboard a boat - and stand by for a terrific scare right at the end. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan Phillippe all made early marks in this huge box-office success.
