Sean S. Cunningham liked the look of Halloween's box office returns and ripped off the basic premise wholesale. In the process he solidified the rules of the slasher movie, and established Tom Savini as the go-to make-up-man for grungy slasher mayhem. He also proved his business savvy by selling the distribution rights to Paramount, who proceeded to make a killing on this franchise.
