Cast your mind back to late 2008. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was receiving ecstatic reviews and Milk was hotly tipped for awards greatness.

And a little film called Slumdog Millionaire was beginning to bark.
You cannot win them all the time, and we should have gone more with our hearts, that wanted Slumdog Millionaire to pick up the majority of awards, and it did! Including Best Director and Best Song.

OUR PREDICTIONS
Best Actor - Mickey Rourke. The lad's done good, pouring his life story and soul into the heartbreaking story of washed-up wrestler Randy The Ram.
Best Actress - Hmmmm. The Academy likes an upset and 14 times nominated Meryl Streep could make it a hat-trick of wins for her turn in Doubt. But, on her sixth nomination we think it's Kate Winslet's year.
Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger. The one guaranteed Oscar. The circumstances are tragic, but there is no doubting Ledger's turn as the mad Clown Prince of Crime deserves this accolade.
Best Supporting Actress - Penelope Cruz. More than just a pretty face, Cruz has matured into an actress of genuine class. And she injects a powerful dose of vitality into Woody Allen's inoffensive but hollow movie, stealing the film is the process.
Best Director - A toughie. Recent successes suggest Danny Boyle, and we'd love to see Manchester's most famous director make good on his first nomination. But with Milk under-represented in other categories, we think the Academy might recognise director Gus Van Sant.
Best Animated Film - WALL.E. Bolt and Kung Fu Panda are great examples of the form, but no-one touches Pixar when it comes to animated magic. And WALL.E may emerge as the studio's best movie.
Best Song - Down to Earth (WALL.E). Peter Gabriel may have bowed out of performing the song on the night, but this great slice of Gabriel pop was a perfect play out to the Pixar film.
Best Foreign Language Film - Waltz with Bashir. The Class won the Palme D'or at Cannes 2008, but this shattering Israeli animated movie about the 1982 Lebanon War is unlike any other movie nominated.
