Precocious, wilful, yet brave and skilled with a lightsaber, the Togruta Ahsoka Tano's bravest mission may be as Padawan to hot-headed Jedi Anakin Skywalker. Read on for Ahsoka's thoughts on being Anakin's apprentice, the secrets of becoming a Jedi, and the secret to good lightsaber technique.
What is it like being the Padawan to Anakin Skywalker?
Ahsoka Tano: It is a challenge every second of every day just to keep up with Master Skywalker. It is also rewarding because he has much to teach about how to be a great a Jedi and the trust and confidence he has in me always inspires me to give my best effort.
What does it take to become a Jedi?
AT: It takes a great deal of patience to learn how to use the powers of the Force, and to develop those powers the Jedi way, one must also develop self discipline. When I was a youngling, I thought the most important thing anyone needed to become a Jedi was to be a good fighter. But now I'm learning that that's only a small part of being a Jedi. There are so many things you need to be good at! A good Jedi knows how to defend themselves and how to protect those who are defenseless. But a Jedi's first attempt at solving any conflict should always be through diplomacy. A good Jedi also needs to be wise, and observant and patient. (I'm still working on that last one.) Most of all, I think I Jedi needs to believe in his or her self. If you believe in yourself, and trust in the force, then absolutely anything is possible.
Do you think people treat you differently as a Jedi because you're a girl?
AT: Sometimes others judge me or underestimate me based on my appearance, but that's usually their first mistake. Their second mistake would be to think I can't take care of myself.
Do you worry you are too young to be a Jedi (Padawan learner)?
AT: The great thing about training under Master Skywalker is that we go from one adventure to the next so fast I don't have time to worry about anything.
What has been your most memorable experience so far?
AT: The rescue of crime lord Jabba the Hutt's son and a lightsaber duel with Sith assassin, Asajj Ventress, are pretty high on the list, but I'd have to say the most memorable experience was when Master Skywalker finally accepted me as his Padawan. I will never forget that day.
Is it hard to learn how to use a lightsaber?
AT: Like all Padawans, I was instructed by Master Yoda in the art of the lightsaber from a very young age. The secret is to practice with it every single day. And I get plenty chopping up battle droids.
What is the most important lesson you've learned from Master Skywalker?
AT: I have learned from watching Master Skywalker that with persistence I can overcome just about any obstacle. He never gives up and that's usually why he rarely fails and I try to follow his lead.
